You have a choice of many kinds of siding available to you - metals like aluminum and steel don’t require maintenance but will cost more. Vinyl siding looks similar to horizontal wood siding but costs less and requires little maintenance, while the down side to it is that it can fade and look dull over time. Wood sidings look great but are costly and require maintenance. Fiber cement sidings are very durable and are a low cost alternative to wood - good looks and low cost. The real advantage is that cement sidings are fireproof and termite-proof. Check all your options, and choose wisely because a home siding is a long lasting investment.

I wondered if it was possible to replace wooden shakes with vinyl siding only on the front of my house. It is a one story ranch - about 60 feet wide (this includes a garage). I'd like a ballpark estimate for materials and installation - and whether or not its possible to cap the sides even if one of the sides on each corner being capped would be wooden shakes.

Currently have aluminum siding, and during recent storm some of the siding was pulled off the side of the house. Would like estimate to repair. Thank you for your time.
